Video Professor Employees send Boxes of Cheer to Troops in Iraq

When you’re in the military and stationed half-way around the world in a combat zone, there’s nothing like a package from home. Last fall, Video Professor Employees adopted a young soldier and his unit currently based in southern Baghdad.

The connection began when Anne Deeb, who leads Video Professor’s Executive Customer Service Team, connected with a soldier about to be deployed overseas. One thing he really needed was a laptop with a webcam so he could keep in touch with his young family while he was away. That sort of thing is a luxury for a young soldier. Anne understood completely, her husband is a veteran who served long deployments away from home. She approached
CEO and Founder John W. Scherer
with the idea and he said yes immediately.

Once the soldier was deployed, employees kept in touch with him and send regular shipments of goodies requested by him and his unit. The Postal Service has designed a special box just for this purpose and while the boxes are just 12” by 12” by 6” deep, you can really pack in a lot of items. The most requested are personal items including wet wipes, deodorant and foot powder but snacks are always appreciated. The boxes usually arrive within a week.

“These young men and women volunteered to take the fight to the enemy on their turf,” says John W. Scherer. “Because of their courage and valor, we can go about our lives and business in safety. It’s the least we can do to send over these small items. Their appreciation touches all of our hearts.”

Patriotism is an important part of the Video Professor culture. Scherer and Video Professor were recently recognized with the Freedom Team Salute by the Chief of Staff of the United States Army for supporting a computer literacy program for retired military.

“There are lots of opportunities for businesses to help support our troops in so many ways, “says Scherer. “I challenge my fellow CEO’s and their employees around the country to find a similar way to say thank those who serve and keep us free.”
