The Video Professor joins the Navy!

LAKEWOOD, Co. - For immediate release
Millions know John W. Scherer as the Video Professor. His commercials and infomercials have been seen by over 100 million people. What you may not know is that John W. Scherer is a patriot with a deep love for his country and appreciation for those who defend it.

It’s one of the reasons he joined the United States Navy’s Leaders to Sea program. It allows the Navy to “show its stuff” to business and civic leaders, and for those same leaders to see how the Navy manages and motivates the extraordinary mix of men and women who defend our nation.

Scherer spent about 30 hours aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. (To see the official site of the Nimitz, click here.) John is quick to point out to taxpayers that he paid for all his expenses involved with the trip.

“Meeting these young men and women was an extraordinary experience,” said Scherer. “On a six-month combat deployment they work 12 hours a day, seven days a week with no days off. They do so with the highest level of enthusiasm and professionalism I’ve ever seen. They do so to keep us free here at home by taking the battle to the enemy, wherever it may be.”

Scherer got to observe all aspects of the ship’s operations both above and below deck. During a full deployment, the Nimitz is a floating city and home to some 5-thousand crewmembers.

“It’s the jets and pilots that get most of the attention,” said Scherer. “But they don’t fly without the hard work of the thousands of fellow crewmembers who arm and fuel the planes, maintain the nuclear power plant, maintain the ship and even those who feed the crew. I’ve never seen a better example of teamwork, ever.”

During his time onboard the Nimitz, Scherer donated a complete Video Professor learning library to the ship&rss library on behalf of Video Professor, Inc. When crewmembers finish a 12-hour shift, a priority for them is education. Many work toward college degrees, advancing their careers in the Navy and even improving their computer skills.

Along with the crew, it was the size of the Nimitz that impressed Scherer. &ldThe flight deck is about 4.5 acres in size, which seems big until it’s full of dozens of planes taking off and landing within feet of each other,” he said. “At over 1,100 feet long, it’s one of the largest in the world. Just standing on the flight deck takes your breath away.”

“I took away a sense of awe for everything I saw,” said Scherer. “But it’s the crewmembers I met that I will remember for the rest of my life. I can‘t think of a better career for a young man or woman. It’s all here: aviation, engineering, teamwork, leadership opportunities and the chance to further your education as far as you’d like. Many join the Navy with high school degrees and leave with college degrees, including undergraduate and master’s degrees. Plus an experience few get to know. The stuff potential employers outside the Navy value now more than ever.”

This was John W. Scherer’s second embarkment as a member of the Leaders to Sea program, having previously spent time aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain.
